Apodytes dimidiata subsp. dimidiata - Variable tree to 15 (-35)m. Occurs in forest, bushveld, on rock outcrops, coast to mountains. Neat, well-rounded crown. Bark smooth, becoming rough, grey with white patches. Bark with white horisontal bands at the coast. Young stems purplish-red. Leaves dark green, leathery. Flowers: sprays of white flowers, scented. In profusion, in terminal clusters (Sep-Apr). Fruit black, small +-round, partly covered by a kidney-shaped, orange to scarlet appendage (Dec-Jul). Attractive seeds, not messy. Attracts birds & bees. Provides deep shade. Excellent for small gardens, as a patio tree or as a bonsai subject. Non-aggressive roots. Prune off lower branches to form single stemmed tree. Mulch thickly with good compost, water regularly and feed with high nitrogen organic or chemical fertilizer to boost growth. Does well inter-planted with pioneer species. Moderate growth rate. Larger trees can handle light frost.
