Carissa haematocarpa - A no-nonsense Carissa widespread in the Cape Karoo . Thorny with hard, thick, olive green leaves and stems it can form an impenetrable barrier especially if combined with C. bispinosa, Maytenus heterophylla and Scutia. Bears starry white, heavily scented flowers followed by edible black fruits loved by birds. Applications of organic fertilizer and water during dry periods encourage faster growth . Good bonzai subject.
