Chironia baccifera

English: Christmas Berry; Afrikaans: Aambei- of Bitterbossie

Chironia baccifera - A highly ornamental shrub, growing to a height of 0.5m typically, but can reach 1m. It usually occurs in sandy & dry dune conditions, where it grows in full sun or in the shade of other plants. It can be found from Namaqualand in the west to Kwa-Zulu in the East, at elevations 0-1500m. Fast growing, it produces starry, bright pink flowers in summer, followed by masses of bright, orange-red berries which start to ripen near Christamas time (hence its English common name). It handles wind very well. Planted in groups in a hedge, or along the front edge of a flowerbed, the plants can be quite stunning. It is one of 16 species of the genus found in South Africa (30 worldwide).
